Content creators are constantly on the lookout for ways to show off their creative side and stand out from the crowd. That's why video content is getting more popular on Instagram. Filming clips is also a great opportunity to boost engagement and communicate with followers.

It is no surprise that people start wondering how to film and edit vertical clips for IGTV. Of course, you can still record stuff and post it in Stories or to the news feed, but filming these videos is so much more convenient. The thing is that creating a high-quality clip for IGTV can require putting in an effort.

In this article, you'll find all the necessary advice on shooting, figuring out the suitable designing and editing tool, and creating a vertical video masterpiece to cause a jaw-dropping effect from your followers.

Also, you can apply these tips to making and editing clips for Instagram Stories, so use them in whichever way you like.

First of all, let's look through the main technical requirements for shooting a vertical video for IGTV:

  • Video format: MP4
  • Length: Clips are restricted to 60 minutes, but the duration ranges from 15 seconds to 10 minutes for regular Instagram users, while bigger and verified accounts can film clips up to 60 minutes.
  • Size: 3.6 GB max size limit for the clips up to 60 minutes, and 650 MB for clips less than 10 minutes.
  • Orientation: vertical (portrait)
  • Aspect ratio: a minimum of 4:5 and a maximum of 9:16

One of the most difficult requirements for shooting this video is probably an aspect ratio or the aspect ratio of the width of the clip to its height.

It can cause some complications just because unless you're not filming on your smartphone (which it usually records in aspect ratio 9:16 if you're shooting a vertical clip), you'll have to edit or crop the clip in post-production to get it right for IGTV.

How to Film Vertical Video for IGTV

When it comes to shooting a vertical video, you have a couple of options.

Option #1. Film on Your Smartphone

The majority of smartphones made in the last couple of years have a screen aspect ratio of 16:9, the same way as most video platforms, like YouTube. This means that the best way to record a vertical video is to record it with your phone while holding it vertically. This way, you won't have to do much of the editing, cropping, trimming, etc. Just film what you want to talk about and share with your audience and the clip will already have a perfect aspect ratio for IGTV.

Option#2. Shoot on Your Camera

The trick is to move and rotate your camera 90 degrees to record a vertical clip instead of a horizontal one.

Note that most digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLR) use an aspect ratio of 3:2. And most compact digital cameras (these cameras are great for capturing a special moment, and shooting immediately as the inspiration strikes) use 4:3. Basically, if you move your camera 90 degrees, it'll help you in producing a vertical clip. But you'll still need to edit the aspect ratio in post-production for it to fit perfectly to IGTV's requirements.

Option #3. Shoot a Horizontal Video and Edit it In Post-Production

This option is definitely more difficult than the previous ones. If this is the one you're going to go with, then you'll have to shoot a clip on your phone or camera, and then you'll need to edit it using special software, like iMovie or Premiere Pro.

This option requires attention when framing the shot. If you're going to shoot a horizontal clip, to convert it into a vertical clip you'll have to crop both left and right sides of it. That's why you need to ensure that the subject of the clip centered all the time.

You don't need to spend tons of money on expensive editing software if you weren't already planning on buying Adobe Premiere Pro. To redact your clip for Instagram, you can use cheaper options. But you'll still be able to achieve amazing results with the project. We're going to go with a couple of options - the one for the laptop (desktop), and the one for the mobile device.

Option #1. Edit the Video on Laptop

If you're using a Mac device, you'll have to go to the App Store, search for the iMovie app and install it on your computer. This application is free.

The next step requires you to open iMovie and click on to create a new project. Then you should upload your video to the software. After that, move your clip 90 degrees so that it looks horizontal. If you don't do this, the application will add black borders to the sides of your clip, and you don't want this. To move the clip 90 degrees, tap on the crop button and move it to the left or to the right.

We're already halfway done! At this point, you can edit your project by adding text captions, backgrounds, and any elements and details you want to.

Once you finish editing the clip, tap at the top of the right corner of the screen to save a file. Then open your clip in QuickTime Player, and press on the edit button in the menu, and move it to the left or to the right so that your clip looks vertical.

Voila! You created an amazing clip and can upload it to your phone or share it directly to Instagram.

Also, if you're using a Windows computer, you can install and use apps like OpenShot.

Option #2. Edit the Video on Mobile Device

To redact the video on your mobile device, you can use different options. It depends on whether you're an iPhone owner or an Android phone owner. iPhone owners can use iMovie mobile, while Android users can use Google Photos app for editing.

Let's talk about how you can edit clips on an iPhone. You probably already have an iMovie application installed on your device (if not, then go to the App Store and do it), and you'll need to install an RFV app from the App Store to move clips.

Once you installed an RFV on your phone, open the clip and move it 90 degrees. Then click to save changes, and save the clip to the camera roll. By the way, for Android phones, the Google Photos app lets you do the same things.

The next step you're going to make is open the iMovie app, and click on the create a new project button, and upload the clip. Now you can crop it, add various filters, change speeds, and edit it the way you like.

Note that you can't make titles rotate in iMovie, so if you want to do that, you'll need to use another designing tool, like Canva.

Once you finish creating your masterpiece, you can export it to your device's camera roll, then open it in RFV to rotate it to the vertical format once again.

That's pretty much it! Now you can share your clip to Instagram's IGTV.

Instagram is one of the most favorite social networks among digital creators, influencers, and regular people. The app makes sharing clips from the mobile device pretty easy and convenient. With an IGTV feature, you can create video content for your business' page, and don't worry about time limits like before. Once you publish a new clip, your followers will see it in their feed, and you can also share the teaser to your clip in Stories. To incorporate this Instagram feature in the marketing strategy would be beneficial for your company.
